Harivihar ,which virtually means abode of Lord Hari(Vishnu),is a 170 year old ancestral house of the erstwhile Kadathunadu royal family, which ruled the northern parts of Malabar in the 18th century. Located in Calicut (Kozhikode),through which the Portugese entered the fabled Indies Harivihar offers its guests the chance of staying in a heritage homestead and imbibe the richness of Ayurveda and Yoga, two great contributions of India to mankind. The house, a show piece of classical Keralan architecture, is set in a quiet residential quarter of the city in an acre of land, with inviting green lawns leading to the moss filled traditional bathing pond. There are just six rooms on offer, five twin rooms and one single rooms . All the rooms have independent bathrooms with hot and cold showers. The kitchen serves simple but delectable vegetarian cusine ,in tune with the ayurveda philosophy. Guests staying for an ayurveda-yoga programme need to stay for at least seven days or even more ,but guests who are part of the regular tourist itinery could stay for two to three days and discover Calicut and its precincts.. In the words of Dr Srikumar and his wife Dr Neetha, a practicing duo of medical professionals(he a child neurologist and she a dermatologist) and the hosts at Harivihar,``This house was meant to be demolished as per our original family plan. However we couldn’t bring ourselves to demolish it and decided to give it a new lease of life. Now when we look back ,we feel so happy and proud that we chose to save Harivihar. Each and every guest we have had, have gone back with lingering memories of their stay here.`` Harivihar is a green leaf accredited center for excellence for ayurveda treatments as well as a diamond classified homestead by the Kerala tourism department.
